oxford atpl cd-rom won't play
by lawrence byrnes - Wednesday, 3 August 2016, 5:26 PM

Hi Ron,
I recently purchased all of Oxfords ATPL CD-ROMs plus the Maths, Physics 1&2 and Navigation Computer course discs(these discs will run). The ATPL Piston Engines and ATPL Gas Turbine Engines are an example of those that won't play on Windows 8.1 or 10. What I get is the page where you chose to 'run in full screen' etc. but this page does not show the navigation buttons in the bottom right corner, therefore I cannot progress beyond that point to open the course.
It seems as though the 'patch' for those discs is in error.
Have you tried to run these discs yourself?
As I said before I bought the whole ATPL course of subjects and I'm stuck. Your help is greatly needed.
Regards,
Lawrie

Hi,

Yes, we have tested all of the fixes multiple time on multiple computers.

Does the CBT not fit on your screen or is it that the bottom of the CBT window is truncated?

Some computers render the CBT window too small and truncate the bottom, but we have not seen this for some time. If this is happening, select the 'Scale Media' option and press RETURN; does that solve the issue?

Ron,
Yes I have tried the 'scale media' check box to no avail. I can see the whole page that says 'scale media' etc. including the bottom of the page but still it doesn't show the navigation buttons. The screen also freezes and I have to shut down to remove it.
Can you offer any other suggestions?
Regards,
Lawrie

Hi,

I cannot replicate this on any of our test machines so this is really hard to troubleshoot. We have seen this before - for reasons that we do not know, in some configurations Windows renders the CBT window at the wrong size and truncates the bottom. I can give you some steps to try and correct this:

1) Run the Gas Turbines CBT
2) When it is running, right-click in the CBT window and choose 'Open Debugger'
3) In the debug window, click the red 'Debug' button and then enter the following into the Scripting window:

--developer--
(the stage).rect = (0,0,1024,768)

4) Click 'DO'. The CBT window should now be positioned in the top-left of your desktop and should be the correct size (1024px x 768px)

5) If the CBT is not filling the window, run the following script:

--developer--
(the stage).drawRect(0,0,1024,768)

If the above works for you, you can do a very similar thing for the Piston Engines CBT. To open the debugger in Piston Engine, right-click in the top-left of the CBT window.

I hope this helps
